Rapid flu testing can diagnose influenza, and antiviral drugs can help treat and prevent H1N1 flu (swine flu) ?

MinuteClinic provides rapid flu testing services, treatment and prevention for all types of influenza when medically appropriate. You don’t need an appointment, and we’re located inside select CVS/pharmacy stores 7 days a week. A rapid flu test to check for influenza can be administered at MinuteClinic, but it can’t diagnose the H1N1 flu (swine flu) strain specifically. The test – administered as a simple nasal swab – takes five minutes and results are available immediately.

Tests can be provided to patients ages 5 and above. A flu diagnosis visit at MinuteClinic, including evaluation of symptoms, testing and treatment plan, costs $102 and is covered by many insurance plans.

If the flu test confirms that you have influenza, a MinuteClinic practitioner may recommend over-the-counter remedies or prescribe antiviral medication. The two antiviral drugs that are effective in treating swine flu are Tamiflu® (oseltamivir) and Relenza® (zanamivir).

If you are already sick with H1N1 flu (swine flu), these antiviral drugs can make your symptoms milder and help you feel better faster. If you have been in contact with the H1N1 flu virus, these antiviral drugs can help prevent you from getting H1N1 flu (swine flu).

MinuteClinic does not prescribe antiviral medication in the presence of some other conditions such as pregnancy and liver disease. Those patients need to see a primary care provider. Also, we can’t administer antiviral medication to patients who received an influenza virus vaccine within 48 hours.
